Be A Giant Campaign: Behind barbwire at Aaron Cohn RYDC, Muscogee YDC and Dekalb RYDC

In May 2011, as a continuation of the UPS $20K Community Grant, the YOH team traveled south to Midland, Georgia to address the youth incarcerated at the Aaron Cohn Regional Youth Detention Center (approximately 65 youth) and the youth incarcerated at the Muscogee Youth Development Campus (approximately 60 youth).

YOH President & Founder Ron Brashear, along with YOH VP/Executive Director Tom Grason, addressed these youth with YOH’s BE A GIANT presentation and concepts.   Mr. Brashear stressed the importance of first, taking ownership of their actions that led these youth to this place in their lives and he challenged each of them to make the choice to GROW through it instead of just GO through it and they too, can have a better tomorrow!  Mr. Grason conveyed, “It is not too late to change your path and trajectory in life.  You can't erase your history and the actions that brought you here but you can begin writing a new chapter in life by being a GIANT today and every day going forward.”  All of the youth received a copy of Mr. Brashear’s book titled, Bouncing back…Living life the right way, along with BE A GIANT wrist bands.

The youth were very receptive and provided very good feedback regarding YOH’s visit, with many of them pledging to become GIANTS in their lives and grow from the bad choices they have made that led to their confinement. Here is a link to some of the testimonials from the sessions which were gathered by the local leadership from the youth - click here to read their testimonies.

In August 2011, YOH received an invite from Dr. Rufus Johnson, Regional Principal of Georgia’s Department of Juvenile Justice, for the YOH team to come address the Youth incarcerated at the Dekalb Regional Youth Detention Center.  This particular center was selected by Dr. Johnson as a top priority for YOH’s programs as a result of a major disruption that took place at this facility earlier in the year.  The Dekalb SWAT team had to be dispatched to this center to restore order after the riot (See http://www.ajc.com/news/dekalb/dekalb-swat-called-to-957855.html)

Dr. Johnson stated, “After witnessing first hand, on numerous occasions over the past few years, the effectiveness and the passion that Mr. Brashear and Mr. Grason put into these sessions with our youth, I just knew they would stand the best chance of reaching some of these most hardened youth housed at the Dekalb center. The session was so inspiring, that the staff made a special request to have a couple of the youth who had caused problems earlier in the day and missed it, to get an opportunity to have a one-on-one session with Mr. Brashear to hear his messages directly.”

Inspiring Youth: Georgia USTA Track and Field Achiever Awards

On August 4th, the USA Track and Field Association of Georgia held its 2011 USTA Young Achievers' Award banquet in conjunction with its 2011 Hall of Fame Class induction.  The organization reached out to Youth of Honor Executive Tom Grason to be their inspirational speaker for the evening to inspire the attendees to continue to set goals in life and work to achieve them.

The USATF Georgia Association Hall of Fame was established in 2011 to recognize the
outstanding achievements of individuals involved in the sport of Athletics, while living within the
geographic boundaries of the Georgia Association. Over the past several months, the USATF Georgia Association Hall of Fame Selection Committee received over 30 candidates in the categories of open and masters’ athletes, coaches, officials and individual contributors, who, based on outstanding achievement or contribution, were certified eligible to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.  The 2011 Inductee list included Edwin Moses, Roger Kingdom, Gwen Torrence, Al Mead, Wyomia Tyus and others (see see the full list - click here).

Prior to the announcement of awards, Mr. Grason shared with the over 150 attendees the tenets of the Be A Giant campaign as the youth to be recognized were not only Giants on the track but also outstanding students.  Just as these youth were excelling and committing themselves to excellence around the oval, they were stepping up to insure education was the foundation for their future.  The audience was encouraged to savor each day and not try and rush through life, as there is much to be gained each day thanks to the love, support and guidance of those around them.  Mr. Grason shared 'some of the best food you could ever eat is a great bar-b-que.  Care is taken to mix various seasonings to bring out the most flavor while patience is required to allow those flavors to soak in and marinate the meat so when eaten it explodes with taste."  Treat your life like a great BBQ with the experience of the day and learnings serving as the seasoning.  Be patient with yourself and others, then when the time is right celebrate the depth of flavor your life will have as each day brings a new page of your personal history.

Inspiring Youth: Red Ribbon Week - Toney Elementary

On October 28, 2011, as part of the 2011 Red Ribbon Week, YOH President & Founder, Ron Brashear, was invited to be the guest speaker and address the youth at Toney Elementary School in Decatur, Georgia. Toney Elementary School is a Title One school in Dekalb County, Georgia with a mission to create a culture of high expectations by forging a collaborative bridge among home, school and community that supports the academic and social development of each student being competitive participant in a global society. “I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with these young folks about our BE A GIANT program," stated Mr. Brashear.

"It was one of the youngest audiences that I have addressed in recent years. I truly believe that the sooner we can plant the seed about respecting education and setting positive goals, in their young minds, it improves the likelihood of success and better life choices. Moreover, I am inspired by the wonderful job that Mr. Oliver Dean, and his staff, are doing with shaping these young precious minds. The youth need to understand that you always have a CHOICE of who carries the label of FRIEND in your life,” stated, Ron Brashear.

Each of the youth in attendance pledged to become GIANTS and all of them received a BE A GIANT wrist band and were encouraged to wear them proudly and practice the concepts that Mr. Brashear discussed in the presentation.

Holiday Giving Campaign
For the fourth straight year the Youth of Honor team is reaching back into the community during the holiday season to sponsor needy families within the community.  We are pleased to announce that this year, with the generosity of many of our supporters, that we are delivering gifts and smiles to three families who are currently struggling and trying to make ends meet.  The addition of these three families brings the total number of families touched to sixteen, but beyond the individual families we are also bringing more cheer this year thanks to the support of Toys For Tots.

Through a partnership with a local, Atlanta-based soup kitchen, Youth of Honor will be delivering gifts to all the youth attending their Holiday Dinner celebration in hopes of bringing smiles to their faces. Many times we all get caught up in our own life and challenges to look within our community to understand the obstacles others are facing.  The Youth of Honor team's commitment to making a difference in the lives of youth with these holiday activities is just another way to show youth that we care.  We encourage you to find a way to touch the life of someone this holiday season.

May your Holiday Season be filled with joy and we wish you continued success as we prepare to enter 2012.

Youth Statistics
Youth violence results in considerable physical, emotional, social, and economic consequences. Although rates of youth homicide have declined substantially during recent years, much work remains in reducing this public health burden. Homicide is the second leading cause of death among youth aged 10–24 years in the United States.

Violence is also a major cause of nonfatal injuries among youth. In 2009, a total of 650,843 young people aged 10–24 years were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal injuries sustained from assaults. No state is immune to the devastating impact of youth violence.
