Inspiring Giants: Marietta RYDC
|

Youth of Honor Foundation Executive Director, Tom Grason, speaks to over 100 incarcerated youth about the value of decision making in life.
Ron Brashear, Youth of Honor President/Founder, shares with youth the value of stepping over obstacles and attaining their goals, like a high school diploma or more. |
Through the support of UPS, the Youth of Honor team made a return visit to the Marietta Regional Youth Detention Center to conduct a 'Be A Giant' session with approximately 100 incarcerated youth. With over 90% of the incarcerated youth returning to our communities, we must proactively educate them on a better way to live.
In addition to conducting the workshop, the YOH team also delivered copies of the 'Bouncing Back... Living life the right way', a book written by Youth of Honor Founder and President, H. Ron Brashear. "When they read this book, it will show them that they can rebound and overcome their poor decisions all the while improving their reading skills," stated Ron.
In his address to the youth, Mr. Brashear told them, “I stand here before you to assure you that you can turn your life around. I know this because I sat in the very same seat that you are sitting in when I was your age and I had to turn my life around. Now is the time! You see where your past got you. So why not give your future a fair opportunity to succeed by approaching your life differently? You know what’s right and what’s wrong. You can begin by revisiting your phone's address book. If you exit this facility with the same contact list you came in here with, then don't expect much to change... find some better friends.”
Youth of Honor Executive Direcor Tom Grason added, "What you did, good or bad, yesterday is done and history. As the sun sets each day it is forever written in history. You can't change it, but you can learn from it. Then each morning we are blessed to start the day with a clean piece of paper with what you do today being written. Why not start today by writing pages of success, achievement and steps towards a new and better tomorrow? Go after that GED you never received. Learn something new or just simply set a new goal and drive to reach it. You'll be amazed at how your history will read after only a couple of weeks of viewing each day in a new light. Start today!”
We invite you to take a moment and read some of the direct feedback that we received from the youth inmates regarding this speaking engagement (click here). Moreover, please feel free to pass this information along to school administrators, and detention centers in your area and let them know that the YOH team would be glad to bring our campaign to their respective facility, school or church family. | Mabry Middle School Documentary featuring Youth of Honor Foundation
|
Mabry Middle School students, teachers and staff are the heart of Mabry, and demonstrate the passion for excellence that Mabry has come to represent. 'HEART' was also the theme for Mabry this year and represents High Expectations, Achievement, Relationships and Technology. Mabry students strive and meet the High Expectations that the Mabry staff and community expect. The films in the Festival reflect the high level of Achievement Mabry students exemplify daily and incorporate Technology to highlight Relationships and concerns that are reflective of real-world issues.
Our charge to the students this year was for them to create a movie that reflected HEART. The film topic could be positive or negative, it could have personal, local or global affect, and it had to have value beyond the classroom setting. One student group working to align to this mission reached out to the Youth of Honor team and asked us to share some thoughts on the value of decision-making. The students, in turn, submitted this film in the 'Best Documentary' category. To the right you have the opportunity to see these students' final product as they endeavored to support the positive growth of themselves and their peers.
The Youth of Honor team congratulates the youth with whom we directly worked with plus all the other Mabry students who played a role in making these short clips a reality. The professionalism and skills they used are just small steps to their future success. |
Youth of Honor is included in the Best Documentary category and we encourage you to watch and see how we are helping to assist youth in their life's journey.

Motivating Tomorrow's Leaders at Laurel Ridge Elementary School's Career Day
|
Through the recommendation of another local school, the Laurel Ridge Elementary School in Dekalb County Georgia invited the Youth of Honor team to attend and present during their Career Day. With many presenters speaking directly about their job and what they do each day, the Youth of Honor team spent time speaking about how these students, even at their young ages, can build a solid foundation for success in any field they choose later in life. Of course, first and foremost is for each of them to continue to focus on their education and learn all they can from the great teachers in their school. Ron Brashear, Youth of Honor President/Founder, then spoke to the youth about how they can become 'giants' at home, in the classroom, with their friends, in the community and to the environment. We appreciated the opportunity to speak to this up and coming group of leaders and look forward to seeing them grow to reach all their dreams.
"Please accept my warmest thanks for participating in Career Day last week. It was very kind of you to spend your time and offer your expertise on life as a positive experience for our young people. The students I spoke to said your presentation was interesting and enjoyable. Many thanks.", as said Ms. Paula Turman, First Grade Teacher at Laurel Ridge Elementary. | Prince Nefew and Da'Mill Youth Group Say 'STOP THE VIOLENCE!'
|
The newest kids on the block, Prince Nefew and Da'Mill, are Atlanta's best kept secret, but not for long. They are: Brionna, 12, a/k/a "Lue Lue," Prince Nefew, 11, Tekeyah, 10, a/k/a "Libby," Thomas, 9, a/k/a "T.Man," Mercedes, 8, a/k/a "Moda," and Johnny, 5, a/k/a "Bean." Together, they are the extraordinarily talented "Prince Nefew and "Da'Mill," and their mantra is simple: "STOP THE VIOLENCE! CEASE THE FIRE!"
Tucked away in Atlanta's West End, this rocking, rapping, stepping, dancing, clapping, stomping, chanting, lyrical group of six kids ranging in ages from 5 to 12, have a message to spread, and they won't stop until their message reaches the masses. With material in their archives dating back over three years and growing up on the Southside of Chicago, where the staggering statistics are echoed by the group's lead spokesperson/rapper, Prince Nefew, 11, in their mantra, "STOP THE VIOLENCE! CEASE THE FIRE!", this talented group of kids witnessed violence ranging from shootings and killings, drug use and dealings, prostitution, teen pregnancy, physical abuse and more prior to relocating to Atlanta less than 4 months ago. "We knew they didn't stand a chance against the negative influences around us, so we turned our frustration into a positive and began performing for others who would dare to listen," stated Prince Nefew, the group's lead rapper/performer and who will be entering the 7th grade this fall. "Between September 2008 and June 2009 120 kids in Chicago were tragically killed. That number equals 5 whole classrooms of 24 kids. When is the violence going to stop?" he asks. The group even performs full-fledged skits and plays to further promote their positive message. Having lost their mother and then their grandmother passing away four months later, rather than allow the kids to become wards of the State [of Illinois], their uncle, Marcus Miller, and father of two children of his own, decided to adopt the four siblings who were his nieces and nephews. Hence, the kids affectionately call Marcus "Uncle Dad."
As CEO of Da'Mill Productions, Marcus is the brainchild of every lyric, every skit, every dance step, every move, every story line, every message that the kids act out or perform. He credits having grounded parents and grandparents who kept him sheltered from outside negative influences growing up with giving him the time and space at home to create his own entertainment. "Back then it was hard because we wanted to be out and about, but now it comes pretty easy," he said. Marcus is joined by His brothers Ramon Martin and Johnny Williams and a close friend, Craig Alexander, who collectively handle security, sound, stage management and every aspect of managing a diverse group of talented kids.
"I was so drawn to these kids and we connected right away," stated Joyace Lopez, Communications Director for Youth of Honor. Ms. Lopez first encountered Prince Nefew and Da'Mill during the second round "Gospel Idol" auditions at Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta when she was assisting with registration. "They were so well-mannered and had an energy about them that just beamed positivity. At the time we met, I had no idea, however, that they had registered to audition earlier that morning, and when they took the stage and performed a piece called "The Ghetto" that had a story line demonstrating the negative things that go on in areas of poverty and substandard living, and I kept thinking, these kids are definitely GIANTS in our community, among their peers, in the environment, in their classrooms (they are all straight-A students), everywhere!" "They are truly the face of Youth of Honor GIANTS, and they should be recognized for their efforts," she said. Prince Nefew and Da'Mill were selected along with nine other acts/groups to perform at Atlanta's Georgia World Congress Center for the upcoming Atlanta Gospel Fest, which replaced T.D. Jake's annual Atlanta Gospel Fest several years ago.
You don't have to be a talented group of kids like Prince Nefew and Da'Mill to become GIANT. As long as you are doing something positive to influence others in your community, class room, church or civic organization, environment, among your peers and even at home, you are a GIANT and you are making a difference. Youth of Honor Turns 4 years old
|
As we write this latest newsletter highlighting our recent accomplishments, we would be remiss to not recognize that the Youth of Honor Organization is celebrating its 4th birthday this month. Just like raising a child, we ask ourselves where has the time gone? But we also look back and remember the many achievements we have made, lives we have touched and supporters like you that we are thankful for each day. The Youth of Honor team, in partnership with you, look forward to many more years of positively touching the lives of youth.
We look forward to getting our programs into the hands of more youth across the United States, and all over the world, so they can 'Bounce Back' from challenges in life and 'Be A Giant' the rest of their lives. Just as there is no handbook on how to be a parent, there isn't a handbook on how to be a youth in today's world either. It is up to the collective 'us' to help mentor, educate and guide our youth on their journey to become who they were meant to be. Whether you realize it or not, through your support of Youth of Honor, you are making a difference and we look forward to continuing our organizational growth and impact with you for years to come. Thank You! | Youth Statistics - Youth Violence
In the United States, the Department of Education defines a high school dropout as an adolescent who has not enrolled in school and has not earned a high school credential . The dropout rate in the United States has been on the decline since 1980. The latest from the U.S. Department of Education study, the Condition of Education 2009, shows that this decline is continuing.
